What is Grief & Trauma?

It is no great secret that we must all face loss at some point in our lives.

This could be in the form of a job loss, a loved one passing or the closing of an old chapter that no longer serves us.

Some of these changes come smoothly like a small ripple in a glass of water. Others? Well they hit like a tsunami leaving us half drowned and shaken to our core.

Who are we after these events? How have they shaped us? Let's break down some terminology that may help you understand what you are experiencing a little better.

Grief explained:

Grief is often described as the feeling of deep sorrow one feels after experiencing a loss. Typically associated with the feelings we experience after the death of someone we care about. While grief can certainly be the result of trauma when it is caused, it can also be a result of working through and healing one's traumas.

Trauma explained:

To break it down into the simplest of explanations trauma is a profoundly disturbing and dysregulating experience that overwhelms one to the point of being unable to cope.  This can lead to both short and long term mental, physical and emotional struggles. Trauma can be caused by singular or multiple events compounding in our body and changing the way we interact with the world.
